PHYLLIS J. JOINER, DeSoto

Phyllis Joan Joiner, 75, passed away October 11, 2010. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, October 14 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel with burial at Oakland Cemetery in De Soto. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

Phyllis was born January 3, 1935 in rural Madison County. Growing up she loved basketball and being on the farm. She developed a love of pigs and had quite the collection. After graduating in 1952 from De Soto High School, she worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield until she married Roland Joiner in 1965. They raised two wonderful children, and spent many summers camping, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. She also volunteered and worked at the De Soto School for many years. Phyllis loved being Grandma, going to soccer games and school programs for her grandchildren, and watching her oldest grandson, Greg, race. A long awaited highlight was seeing her son, Alan, get married this spring. She enjoyed reading, a good movie and traveling around in search of the best tenderloin. Her dog Sugar brought her lots of smiles and laughter.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Roland; daughter, Kayla (Tom) Dollens; son, Alan (Paula); brothers, Darrell and Harold "Archie" Dunbar; and three grandchildren Greg, Theron, and Evan. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Phoebe and Bert Dunbar; and sister, Madelyn Bratton.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the De Soto United Methodist Church or the De Soto Fire and Rescue.
