Able D. Hills was born in Pike Co., Ill., February 5, 1825, and died at the home of his son Leonard in Winterset, Iowa, December 24, 1912, aged 87 years, 10 months and 19 days.

He was married to Susanna Beall in Pike county, Ill., in 1845. To this union were born nine children, six of whom with the wife and mother have preceded him to the better land. He leaves two sons, Alfred and Leonard of this county, and one daughter, Mrs. Charity Ratliff of Alfalfa, Oklahoma, a number of grand children and many friends to look forward to a reunion in the land of unending day. His sons and their wives and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Laura Hills of Kansas City, Mo., were present.

He moved with his family to Iowa in 1856 and has been a resident of Winterset since 1862. He was one of the pioneers who helped to carve out this country and make it what it is.

He was converted and united with the Baptist church in early manhood and lived a consistant Christian life until death. He was a loving husband, a kind, indulgent father, a good neighbor and a faithful friend. He leaves to his children the legacy of an untarnished name and a pure and beautiful character.

The funeral was held at the home at 408 South 4th street, on Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. John Stuart, and his body was laid to rest in the Rock City cemetery.
