Mary (Elderkin) Newton of Des Moines died September 16, 2010. The body will be cremated with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery in Madrid. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mary Newton was born November 29, 1920 in Lincoln Township, Madison County, Iowa to Opal Lorraine (Clark) and Glenn Pardee Elderkin. She was the youngest of six children. She attended Hooten country school up to eighth grade and then attended Winterset School graduating with the class of 1938.
Mary then attended Des Moines Beauty School and worked for a beauty shop in Madrid, Iowa where she met her husband, Thomas Newton. They were married February 7, 1943 in Des Moines at her parent’s home.
While her husband served in the Coast Guard during World War II, she worked in beauty shops in Des Moines. In 1966, Mary began working for the Des Moines Public Schools in office work and retired from there in 1986.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, the Iowa Poetry Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mary had many poems published and also enjoyed collecting and documenting the genealogy and history of several families, including her own.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas; sisters, Florence Peterson of Red Oak and Dawn Brueck of Ida Grove; and brothers, John of Vinton and Frank of Winterset. Mary is survived by a sister, Marguerite Holley of Nevada, Iowa and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorials may be given to the family with a memorial to be established at a later date.
