ELIZA EVANS ROBERTS

The angel of death has again come in our midst, and claimed Mrs. Eliza Evans Roberts. She was born in Clayton county, Iowa, Dec. 28, 1861 and passed away at her home near Truro, Iowa, April 28, 1919 at the age of 57 years and 4 months.

In early childhood, she moved with her parents, J. M. and Elizabeth Evans, to Madison county, where she has resided the greater part of her life.

On May 9, 1880, she was married to Chas. A. Roberts. To them were born nine children: Sadie May, who passed away April 20, 1904 and Lizzie, wife of Ralph Donaldson, who died Dec. 26, 1915. Those surviving are: George W., Mrs. Otto Kahre of Winterset, Frank of Dexter, Henry and Mrs. F. E. Wilson of Des Moines, Julia and Joe, who resided at home with their mother. Three grandchildren and three sisters and four brothers also survive. Two sisters and two brothers from Nebraska were here to pay their last tribute of love to the dear one. All the children were at the bedside when their mother passed away.

In 1900 she made the good confession and accepted Christ as her Savior and was a member of the United Brethren church. In January 1918 she was taken ill and went to the Methodist hospital at Des Moines where she spent several weeks taking medical treatment, not showing much improvement she decided to consult the Mayo Brothers at Rochester, Minn. The examination showing sugar diabetes. Returning from there she went to Waukesha, Wis., where she spent several weeks taking treatments in hopes of regaining her health, being benefited only for a short time. Four months ago she became worse and was bed fast, a greater part of that time. Mary Armstrong, a young lady to whom she had been a mother and friend, cared for her in appreciation of what she had been to her, doing all that could be done to lessen her suffering.

Her one thought was for her loved ones, but God saw best to take her from her earthly home to her home above, where pain and sorrow are unknown for Jesus has said, “Come ye who are weak and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Funeral services were conducted on Friday afternoon in the United Presbyterian church by Rev. W. J. Stewart. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
