WILLIAM C. SMITH

William C. Smith was born in Milwaukee, Wis., Dec. 24, 1846. Died at his home near Booneville, Iowa, Oct. 21, 1914. He had been a patient sufferer of paralysis the last few years which complicated with asthma, was the cause of his death.

Mr. Smith was a soldier of the Civil War, having enlisted in Co. I, 46th Iowa, May 30, 1864, and served until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged.

He was married Jan. 20, 1879 to Sophia Duffy, and moved in the spring of 1885 to the farm where he resided at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, three sons: Joe J. of Bevington, Alfred C. of Van Meter, and Wm. C. at home; one daughter, Mrs. Maggie Driscoll of Booneville, eleven grandchildren, two brothers, one sister and a host of friends. Mr. Smith was a man who lived an honest, upright life, and was ever fair in his dealings with his fellow man. He was a devoted husband and father, and a kindly generous friend and neighbor. To those who mourn his loss, there is consolation in the good name which he left to them as his most precious gift.

The funeral was held Saturday morning at the Catholic church of which he became a member three years ago. The services were conducted by Rev. Dugan, who paid a glowing tribute to the well spent life of the deceased. He was laid to rest in the cemetery just south of the church (St. Patrick's), where a host of friends and neighbors gathered to pay this last respect. The flag which he followed so faithfully, was unfurled over his grave by his brother comrades of the G. A. R.
