Francis Villiers was born in Paris, France, Dec. 20, 1831. He died in Winterset, Iowa, Sept. 27, 1914, aged 82 years, 9 months and 7 days.
The deceased came to America in 1848 when 17 years of age, leaving his native land to avoid the strict military requirements. He remained in the east for a few years, coming to Iowa and settling in Van Buren county, where he was married. He enlisted at Keosauqua, Van Buren county, Iowa, in Co. H, 19th Iowa Vol. Infantry, Aug. 10, 1862, and was discharged from the service of his country at the close of the war. He with his family came to Madison county soon after the war, where he has since made his home. His wife proceeded him to the grave in March, 1900. He was a mason by trade.
He leaves surviving him, 2 sons, and 2 daughters, Jake and Frank Villiers, Mrs. Mary Stephenson, and Mrs. Ida Smith, with whom he has made his home since the death of his wife, also several grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Rev. L. F. Davis. The G.A.R. using their funeral service at the home. Interment in Rock City cemetery.
