Death of L. W. Harrell

L. W. Harrell, one of the old residents and well to do farmers of Scott township, died early yesterday morning at the age of 79. He had been in poor health for the greater part of the time during the past year, but was confined to his bed only three days. Mr. Harrell came to this county from his native state, Indiana, some time in the sixties. He was an industrious, exemplary citizen and highly respected in the neighborhood where he had lived for nearly half a century.

L. W. Harrell died at his home on Wednesday morning, May 9, 1911 after an illness of a few days. The funeral services were held at Zion on Friday, May 12th at 2 o’clock, Rev. Follansbee preaching a very able and helping sermon and also read the following:

“Lewis William Harrell was born in Jackson county, Indiana, on March 12, 1832, and died at his home in Madison county, May 10, 1911, aged 79 years, 1 month and 28 days. He was married to Miss Martha Scott at her home in Jackson county, Mar. 14, 1861. Their golden wedding anniversary was celebrated this year. To this union were born nine children, two having preceded the father to the better land, a daughter who died in infancy and a son, John who died March 12, 1894, aged 16 years. The surviving children are: Cass Harrell of --------------, ---------- Schoenenberger, Peru, Iowa; Mrs. Laura Holmes, Elida, New Mexico; Mrs. Hettie Deal, Newton, Kansas; Mrs. Ida Sellers and Frank and Cleveland Harrell of Winterset. He also leaves two brothers, Ed Harrell of Winterset and Erastus Harrell of Hansen, Nebraska.

He united with the Christian Union church in the year 1886, being converted during a revival meeting held in Zion church that year. He was never demonstrative in his profession, but in a quiet manner expressed his hope of the world beyond. To those who were closest to him, assurance was given of that eternal hope which is the soul’s great anchor. May his companion for half a century, his seven children, all of whom were present, the two aged brothers and all be in readiness for that change which comes to the sons and daughter of mankind.” Interment was made in the Beardsley cemetery.
