Miss Caroline Volk was born in Wurtenberg, Germany, March 4, 1845, and died in Denver, Colorado, March 21, 1911, being 66 years and 17 days old. At the age of two years, the deceased, with her parents, brothers and sisters, emigrated to America, and settled near Columbus, Ohio, but after a few years removed to Jasper county, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood.

On the 9th day of March 1869, she was united in marriage to John Mayer, and at once removed to Adair county, where they made their home till 1899 when they moved to Indianola. After some years, finding it necessary for health reasons, to make another change, a temporary residence was made in Colorado in the fall of 1910.

To this union were born six children, Stephen, George, deceased; Emil, Ross, Carrie and Lydia, who with the sorrow stricken and beloved husband, four brothers and one sister, and three grandchildren are left to mourn the loss of the departed one.

In the spring of 1866, Mrs. Mayer was converted and at once became a member of the M.E. church, of which she has ever since been a loyal and faithful adherent. Of the deceased it can be truly said that she was a woman of acts and few words. She was modest and retiring. Her sphere was her home with her family and her church. She was a faithful wife and a true and tender mother, by practice and precept always reminding those dear to her, to fear God, and follow in the footsteps of the Master. The latter part of her life, she was afflicted with much illness and suffering, but through all this, her faith never wavered, being founded on the “Rock of Ages”.

Funeral services were conducted March 24th at Wesley Chapel, by Rev. J. N. Woodward of Indianola.
