Joe C. DoddJoe C. Dodd, 90, of State Center, died Friday, October 24th, 2008, at MMSC. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28th, 2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church in State Center. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Joe was born on July 26, 1918, in Truro, Iowa. He was the son of George W. and Flossie (Swearingen) Dodd. Flossie died in the flu epidemic of 1918, and George later married his second wife, Lydia, and she became Joe's stepmother and helped raise Joe. Joe graduated from North High School in Des Moines. After high school, Joe bought the Winterset bowling alley. On May 10, 1940, Joe married Frieda Austin when they eloped to Albany, Missouri. After their marriage, Joe enlisted in the United States Air Corps. He served stateside during World War II. After his military service, the couple lived in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, until recently establishing residency back in Iowa by moving to State Center in May of 2008.
Joe worked as a salesman for The Vernon Company in Newton. His father, George W. Dodd, was one of the founders of the company, Joe was very strong in his faith and his love of Christ He founded two churches in Laurie Missouri - Peace Lutheran Church and Shaped By The Cross Lutheran Church. Joe enjoyed golfing and going to Wal-Mart.
Joe is survived by his wife of more than 68 years, Frieda; his two sons, Dennis (Mona) Dodd of Maine and Texas, and Donald (Phyllis) Dodd of Marshalltown; his 5 grandchildren; and his 14 great grandchildren. In death, Joe has rejoined his parents and his brothers and sisters.
