Obituary

Gertrude A. Backus was born at Montrose, Susquehannah county, Pa., August 1, 1843. She came with her parents to Iowa about the year 1846. She was married to Robert Niblo at Scotch Grove, Ia., July 1st, 1863. To this union were born eight children, five boys and three girls. Six of the children survive her: W. L. Niblo, of Winterset; T. G., of Pitzer; R. S., of Earlham; Mrs. Jessie Baker, of Peru; Mrs. Gertrude Rumford, of Kansas.

Her husband and two of the children have gone before her in death. Her husband died November 15th, 1902; Ida in August, 1874, and Fred J. Apr. 15, 1901.

She came with her husband to Madison county in March, 1875, where she resided until her death at her home in Winterset, Dec. 27, 1910.

She was converted to the Christian religion when about 15 years of age, and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. After her marriage her membership was transferred to the United Presbyterian church, where she remained a faithful and consistent member until her death. Her delight was to be in the house of God at divine worship. Her heart was in it. She loved her home and her church, and was a loving and kind mother. She was patient and resigned in her sickness and suffering. Her life will be greatly missed in the neighborhood and church.

The funeral was held in the U. P. church at 10:30 Thursday, conducted by T. V. Dugan, pastor.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to all the neighbors and friends for their kindness and help in this hour of sorrow.
