Dies from Injuries

Ben Clopton and Davy Hunter were riding double on a pony down Court Avenue Friday night about 11 o’clock, when the pony became frightened, reared up and fell back on its riders. Both men are said to have been intoxicated. Hunter was able to get away but Clopton was not. The police was notified and he was taken to jail. Dr. Skinner was summoned immediately to examine him for injuries but could find none. The next morning the doctor again made an examination and discovered that he was injured but could not determine in what way, so he ordered him taken home where he steadily grew worse and died Saturday night. These are the facts as near as we can get them. There seems to be some criticism of the officers for their actions in the matter, but so far as we are able to learn their course was in the line of duty and good judgment.

The funeral occurred today from the Christian church, conducted by Rev. Moulton, and interment was made in the Rock City cemetery.

Obituary

Benjamin Harrison Clopton was born in Madison county, Iowa, Oct. 28, 1889. At the age of about three months his aunt, Mrs. Geo. Shaver, took him and raised him as she would have done her own son. No son could have been more considerate of his mother than Bennie was for his aunt.

On Friday evening July 22, he was thrown from a horse and died from his injuries the next day. The funeral services were held from the home of his aunt, Mrs. Geo. Shaver, conducted by Rev. E. E. Bennett, of Des Moines, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Rock City cemetery.

He leaves a father, two sisters, and two brothers, his mother having died when he was but a babe.
