Our little town was thrown in a state of excitement by the sudden death of Alfred Read. Mr. Read had eaten a hearty dinner and seemed as well as ever, he went out and brought in an armful of wood and sat down and fell out of his chair dead.

Obituary

Alfred Read of Barney died very suddenly Sunday Dec. 5th at about 2 o’clock. He was born in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England, March 16, 1848 and died Dec. 5th, 1909, aged 61 years 9 months and 21 days.

When a child he came to this country with his parents and in 1855 the family settled near Winterset, Iowa. He was married to Sadina Gardener Dec. 10, 1876 and to this union was born 5 children, four girls and one boy, Adda May Read, Nellie O. Fisher, Jennie E. Simpson, Susan Read and Harry Read all of whom survive him and together with his wife, three brothers and other near relatives were present at the funeral.

Death was so sudden as to be a very severe shock to the family especially to his companion who was sitting in the room when he fell, but so it is, when perhaps we least expect it, the call comes and we are ushered into eternity, sometimes, as in this case, without a moment’s notice.

“Be ye therefore ready for in such an hour as ye know not the Son of Man cometh.”
