LYMAN EDGAR OAKS

Lyman Edgar Oaks, son of Burton Samual Oaks and Lottie Mae Lucas Oaks, was born in Adair County, Iowa, January 22, 1910 and passed away November 19, 1989.

Lyman was raised south of Dexter on a farm in Adair County and attended county school nearby and the Dexter High School.

On February 7, 1931, he was united in marriage with Leona Louise Wetrich at Adel, Iowa. To this union was born one daughter, Shirley Joan. Lyman and Leona also gave homes to several boys, Richard Bacon of Panora, Iowa, Henry Gripenburg from the Iowa Childrens Home and Dale Battles.

Lyman farmed in Warren, Dallas, Guthrie and Madison counties until his health failed in 1965. He sold his farm and moved to Earlham, working for Bobst Implement and then for Monarch Mfg. Company near Adel, Iowa. Lyman loved his work at Monarch, retiring in 1980. Lyman attended the Earlham Church of Christ but was a long time member of the Methodist Church. His joys were his family, home, friends, church and traveling until his health would not permit. In April of 1985 Lyman enterd Bethesda Care Center in Winterset and was a resident there until his death.

Lyman was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leroy, Leo and one in infancy, and one infant sister; also two of the boys he provided homes for, Richard and Henry

Those surviving are his wife Leona; one daughter Shirley and husband Stanley Marquardt of Quincy, Illinois; two granddaughters, Sandra and husband Don Price of Overland Park, Kansas and Susan and husband Charles Blystone of Normal, Illinois; one brother, Lavern, and one sister, Lois Withhart, both of Lewisville, Mississippi, nieces, nephews and friends.
