Obituary

One of Madison county’s old and honored citizens, Solomon Alisha Barnard, passed quietly away June 24th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ira Quick, in Barney, with whom he had lived since the death of his wife Nov. 7th, 1904.

Mr. Barnard was born June 1, 1833, near Carlton, Green county, Ill. On Feb. 21, 1856, he was married to Mary A. Mann. To this union was born nine children, six of whom are living and were present at the funeral.

He came to Iowa in 1867, and was one of her sturdy pioneers, bearing with a strong, cheerful spirit his share of the burdens and hardships. He was a good neighbor and his hospitality was enjoyed by all who came to his home. His public spirit caused him to take a hearty interest in forwarding the general welfare of the community. He raised most of the money needed to complete the church at Barney. He was a devoted father and the children showed their appreciation in the most faithful care given him during his long sickness. His patient, hopeful and self-forgetting spirit made a deep impression on all who were about him during his illness.

The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. A. Macy, Saturday at 11 a.m., in the church at Barney. He was laid to rest in the cemetery south of town.

Note: Burial was made in the Barney cemetery.
