Hubert 'Herb' R. Vance, 85, of Michael Street, died Sunday at home. He was a retired tire builder for Uniroyal Co. of Chicopee, with more than 35 years of service. Born in Winterset, Iowa, he lived in Ludlow for many years.

He was a member of the First Church in Ludlow and their Saturday Evening Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a technician fifth grade in Battery C 103rd Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion. He served in the Sicilian, Normandy, Northern France and Germany campaigns. He received the Good Conduct medal, American Defense Service medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign ribbon.

His wife, the former Maryanna Glog, died in 1996. He leaves three daughters, Linda L. Vance of Ludlow, Debbie A. Vance of Chicopee, and Joan M. Vance of Hartford, Conn.; a brother, Walter of Chicago, Ill.; and a sister, Helen Pennick of San Francisco, Calif.

The funeral with military honors will be Wednesday morning at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home and in the church, with burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice Western New England, 50 Maple St., P.O. Box 9058, Springfield, MA 01102-9058.
