CECIL WHARFF Of St. Charles Dies

Cecil H. Wharff, a well known St. Charles resident, was found dead in his car last Wednesday afternoon on a secondary road southeast of Peru.

The car had crashed into the ditch, but apparently rolled completely over and stopped on its wheels. Wharff's body was found inside the car by Highway Patrolman Larry Heid of Winterset when he came to investigate the wrecked car. A shotgun was found beside the body, with one barrel discharged.

Sheriff Rex Rouse and Dr. Paul Eggleston, county medical examiner, were called to the scene. After investigation, Doctor Eggleston filed a report indicating death resulted from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Mr. Wharff was 66 years of age at his death, and had been a resident of Madison county for 30 years. He was born at Liberty, Iowa on Feb. 20, 1898. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, and was a member of the American Legion, and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post at St. Charles.

He was married in 1919 at Leon to Edna Duncan, who survives him. He also leaves a son, Cecil Wharff, Jr., of Norwalk; and a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Downs of St. Charles. Also surviving are four grandchildren: three brothers, Harry Wharff of Bradenton, Fla., John Wharff of Grayling, Mich.; and a sister, Mrs. Golda Black of St. Charles.

Funeral services were held Saturday, in charge of the Rev. L. L. Root. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
