Brison S. Miller, one of the old settlers of Winterset, died at the Soldiers’ Home at Marshalltown last Saturday, Aug. 15th, after a lingering illness of several years standing. He was one of the old business men of Winterset and was well and favorably known.
Brison Miller was born in Jackson county, Ind., Oct. 6, 1829. He married Rebecca Haynes April 24, 1857, to them were born three children, a daughter now living in Chicago is the only survivor. He was married a second time in 1868 to Mary J. Stanley who died in this city in 1902. To them were born four children, two of which survive, Orin R. of Portland, Ore., and Chauncy S. of this place.
The remains were brought here on Monday and in the afternoon were buried in the family lot in the Rock City cemetery.

Page 1Brinson S. Miller, an old resident of this place and a veteran of the civil war, died at the Soldiers’ Home at Marshalltown, on last Saturday. The remains were brought here for interment and funeral services were held from the late home on Monday afternoon. Rev. E. M. Atwood, of the Baptist church, conducted the religious services and the I.O.O.F. and G.A.R. orders were in attendance.
The deceased was born in Jackson county, Indiana, Oct. 6, 1829. He was married to Rebecca Haynes April 24, 1854. To this union, three children were born and one survives, a daughter living in Chicago.
He moved to Oregon in an early day and from that state enlisted in the defense of his county as a member of the 1st Oregon cavalry.
He came to Winterset soon after the war and was here married to Mary J. Stanley, who died August 4, 1902. To them were born three children, Orin R., now of Portland, Oregon, and Chauncy S. of this place still survive him.
Of late years, he had been confined to the house with the disease of cancer which finally caused his death. He suffered much but bore his affliction with sublime fortitude. Older residents of Winterset will remember him as a man of generous impulses and exemplary life.
