ROBERT FITCH SANDAHL, WEST DES MOINES, IOWA

Bob was born to Lester and Lois Sandahl on Nov. 8, 1923, in Des Moines where he was a lifelong resident. He died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010.

Bob attended The Hill School and Southern Arizona School. After his service in World War II, he attended the University of Iowa and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He later attended Drake Law School. Bob married Suzanne on Dec. 23, 1946, and they were blessed to have 63 years together. Bob was president of McRay Cosmetic Company from 1959 to 1982.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and founded the Winterset Hunt Club and Lodge in 1985. In 1966, Bob campaigned a field trial champion Labrador retriever and competed in the Nationals in Idaho. He was past president and a lifetime member of the Iowa Retriever Club. Bob judged many events and competed in the 2009 season. He also was a member of Quiet Bird Men, Duck’s Unlimited, Izaak Walton League, and the Ingersoll Gun Club.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; brother, Craig (Elizabeth); his sons, Robert (Paula) and Curt (Andree); six grandchildren — Kelsey, Sarah, James, Jessica, Alexis, and Max; one great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. Please direct memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines or St. Albans Episcopal Church in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
