Obituary

Alexander Johnston was born in Franklin county, Ind. Nov. 30, 1830, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Drake, of Madison county, Ia., Aug. 16, 1908, aged 77 years, 8 months and 17 days. Mr. Johnston came with his parents to Iowa when a boy and grew to manhood in Madison county. He then returned to Indiana where he met and was married to Miss Elizabeth Hays Aug. 3, 1853. To this union eight children were born, all of whom are living. Their names are as follows: Mrs. Mary Witt, Hebron, Ia., Mrs. Anna Stevens, Elliott, Ia., Mrs. Elizabeth Fennimore, Fargo, Okla., Mrs. Martha Drake, Earlham, Ia., John Johnston, Fargo, Okla., Wm. Johnston, Wolford, N. Da., Lulu Chambers, Fargo, Okla. And Albert Johnston, Moorland, Okla.

After spending ten years in Indiana he returned to his boyhood county where he lived almost forty years. Aug. 10, 1906 his wife passed to the unknown world. Soon after this he went to Oklahoma where he remained until his last sickness.

Mr. Johnston with his wife united with the Methodist church where he remained for several years, but about 11 years ago, during the pastorate of Rev. Stevens, united with the Church of Christ at Early Chapel, Madison county, Ia. Mr. Johnston was very industrious during his lifetime, even after he moved to Oklahoma he broke out 160 acres of new ground, which was remarkable for a man of his age. About two years ago he received a stroke of paralysis which effected one side of his body, causing the loss of sight in one eye and greatly effected the other. His increasing love for his Savior, even to the last, spoke of his deep religious convictions. He said with Paul, “I am ready to be offered.” He was ever faithful to the last. We lay his body to rest but his works are here as witnesses today.
