Death of Grandma Todd

The death of Mary A. Todd occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dr. Hinshaw Monday night. Grandma, as she was lovingly called by all her friends, had been indisposed for the past three weeks, in fact she had never entirely recovered from a spell of sickness last fall. On account of her great age she was not able to successfully combat even a slight reduction of her vital forces. She died without pain and very peacefully, quite in harmony with her gentle peaceful and loving life.

Mary A. Bare was born in Augusta county, Virginia, January 30th, 1814, thus attaining the age of 94 years, which is truly remarkable. At the age of five years, with her parents she removed to Indiana. When a young lady of 19 she was married to Dr. Andrew Todd. To this union was born nine children, eight boys and one girl, six of the sons and the daughter surviving.

Twenty-seven years ago after successfully raising their large family the aged pair came to Winterset to make their home with the only daughter, Mrs. Hinshaw. During the closing days of 1890, Dr. Todd passed to his reward, at the age of 82, leaving his faithful and loving wife to mourn him many years ere their joyous reunion.

Grandma Todd’s was a most beautiful character. Loving, patient, tender-hearted and cheerful through all her long life. Hers was a charitable nature, never had she a derogatory word for anybody and it can be truly said of her that she loved everyone. She leaves a beautiful life behind her and a shining example of a Christian life that will endure through all ages. Her welcome will be “well done, good and faithful servant.”

The funeral occurred at the Hinshaw home yesterday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest beside that of her companion.

Mary A. Bare was born in Augusta county, Virginia in 1814, and died Monday, April 20th. At the age of five years she came with her parents to Indiana, where she resided till 1856.

She was converted and united with the Presbyterian church early in life. At the age of nineteen she was married to Dr. Andrew Todd, who died in 1860. There were nine children in the family, of whom seven are living; six sons, and one daughter Mrs. J. Hinshaw, of this city and with whom she has made her home for twenty-seven years. She was a lady of lovely Christian character; her influence was always for the good and her example worthy of imitation. She always aimed to bring up her children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and now that she is gone they rise up and call her blessed.

At the time of her death, mother Todd was the oldest person in Winterset, she being older than Dr. McCaughan.

The funeral took place last Wednesday at the resident of D. Hinshaw, conducted by Rev. J. S. Corkey.
