Aged Pioneer Dies. Was One of Madison County’s Foremost Citizens
John Macumber, one of the oldest pioneers of Madison county died at the home of his son-in-law, W. W. Greer, on Wednesday of last week. He was over eighty-six years old, and had been in feeble health for a long time.
John Macumber was for years the best known citizen of the south part of the county. With his wife and family he came from Missouri in 1853, and settled on the big divide between Middle River and Clanton. The Macumber house for many years was a conspicuous marking point on the road to Afton and to the south. He was a virile, sturdy, outspoken man.
Nine of the eleven children survive him, and when each one left the home John Macumber gave him a quarter section of land.
The funeral was preached by an old friend who came to pay his tribute. The burial was at Big Grove.
