A memorial reception will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in the Governor Hotel for Viola M. Nelson, who died Jan. 1 at age 89.
Mrs. Nelson was born Dec. 23, 1910, in New York City. Her maiden name was von Landesberg.

She and her husband owned newspapers in Earlham, Iowa, Tombstone, Ariz., Rainier, Gresham and Nelscott. In 1950, they opened Nelson Sales Co., a Portland wholesale store, which closed in 1975. She also ran the on-board gift shop for a cruise ship in the early 1970s.

She moved to Bend last year. She married Maurice Nelson in 1932; he died in 1971.

Survivors include her sons, Peter M. of Aloha, Roger of Kenwood, Calif.; daughter, Linda Frost of Bend; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Washington County Hospice. Arrangements are by Niswonger, Reynolds & Tabor in Bend.
