Obituary

Daniel Grosscup was born in Fayette county, Pa., Oct. 24, 1821. Moved to Ashland county, Ohio during early boyhood. He was married in 1841 to Miss Fannie Stober who was also born in Pennsylvania. He began life as a farmer in said county. Losing his companion by death, again in 1854 he was united in marriage to Isabella M. Ryall, whose native state was Ohio.

In the war of the Union he enlisted as a private in the 42d O.V.I., Garfield’s regiment, serving three full years. In the Vicksburg campaign, on May 1, 1863 he was severely wounded. He was mustered out of service in 1864 as a fourth sergeant. Disheartened from his farm loses during the war, he sold out and entered the lumber business, yard and saw mill work, at Ashland, O., in which he prospered until in 1872 he met with a foot crushing accident in the planer which disabled him from work in that line.

He was engaged in grocery merchandise for a short term, when he again made sales and purchased and moved on a farm in Madison county, Ia., eight miles west of Winterset. This was in 1876. Here he rebuilt a home and occupied it until he retired from farming and moved to Winterset in 1907.

In 1896 Mrs. Isabella Grosscup passed to the home beyond at the age of 66. In 1902 Mrs. Jessie G. Thompson, of Winterset followed at the age of 46. In 1906, his oldest son, Elias J. Grosscup, residing at Ashland, O., followed at the age of 64.

Deceased was baptized in infancy in the Lutheran church in Pennsylvania. Became active in church work in early manhood, serving for many years as elder, a short time as Sunday school superintendent, represented his church as commissioner to its general body and serving it in various capacities.

As partial reward for his faithfulness he has witnessed the testimony of all his grown children of faith in Lord Jesus Christ for personal salvation. Since taking up his residence in Winterset he had placed his membership with the Presbyterian church.

There remain of his family five souls: Rev. Danial P. Grosscup, of Kinbrae, Minn., Mrs. Fianna M. Fry, of Iowa City, Ia., Luther M. Grosscup, of Valley Junction, Miss Jane Anastasia Grosscup and Miss Alice Margaret Grosscup, of Winterset.

Died Dec. 28, 1907, aged 86 years, 2 months and 4 days.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
