Harry Elsworth Swafford was born in Mercer county, Ill., Aug. 13th, 1861, and departed this life on May 20th, 1904 in Winterset, Ia., being 42 years, 10 months and 7 days old at the time of his death. Mr. Swafford grew to manhood in the state of Illinois and moved to Iowa about 20 years ago. He was married to Miss Carrie Kirkland, of Des Moines, Ia., and to this union one son was born, Willis Henry, who at the tender age of eight is left without a father’s care.
Mr. Swafford was a member of the order of K. P’s and was much appreciated by all the members of the order. Though Mr. Swafford was never identified with any church he read the bible and we are told was a man of prayer during the last few months of his life. To the mother some time ago he said, “I have faith in Jesus and am not afraid to die.” May God’s blessings rest upon all who mourn his loss.
The funeral was preached by Rev. Matheney at the home of his mother, Mrs. T. M. Darnell on East Court Avenue, Saturday, May 21st, at 2:30 p.m. and the remains were taken on the night train to Davenport, Ia., where at his request they will be cremated. The remains were accompanied by his mother, wife, brother and a few immediate friends.
