Lucille Augusta Hope, St Charles

Lucille Augusta (Roberts) Hope, the daughter of George W. and Marie (Neindorf) Roberts, was born April 19, 1912, in Dallas County, Iowa and died March 6, 1988, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in des Moines, at the age of seventy-five years.

Lucille was the second of four children; she had an older sister Alcy and a younger sister and brother, Dorothy and Paul. Her family moved from Dallas County to Macksburg for a few years and then to the Elm Grove area where Lucille lived most of her early life.

In 1936 Lucille was united in marriage to Kenneth Hope. To this union two children were born, a son Robert in 1937, and a daughter Beverly in 1942.

Lucille lived in Madison County most of her adult life. Her family remained in the Elm Grove neighborhood for ten years, before moving to the edge of St. Charles in 1946, where she and Kenneth had purchased a hardware store. They later moved into St. Charles in 1950 where they continued to own and operate the hardware store until 1961. Kenneth died that same year at the age of fifty-one.

Following Kenneth’s death, Lucille continued to live in St. Charles. She worked as a sales clerk at the downtown Younkers store in Des Moines for approximately seventeen years until retiring in 1978. In 1986 she moved to the Bethesda Nursing Home in Winterset, and in December, 1987, became a resident of the Indianola Good Samaritan Center.

Lucille was confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Van Meter. In 1953 she joined the Methodist Church in St. Charles with her immediate family. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Model Chapter 174 in St. Charles.

Surviving are her son, Robert of St. Charles; a daughter, Beverly Hope of Phoenix, Arizona; a brother, Paul Roberts, also of Phoenix; two sisters, Alcy Utsler of Winterset, and Dorothy Gray of rural Winterset.

Funeral services were held March 9, at the Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with Pastor Jim Patrick officiating. Burial was in the St. Charles cemetery.
