St. Charles

On Thursday morning after a brief illness, Stephen Steele and daughters were bereaved by the loss of a devoted wife and mother. The deceased had, until a few months ago, been an apparently confirmed invalid, but after an extended treatment at hands of a Des Moines specialist she and her friends felt hopeful that she had obtained a new lease of life. This, however, proved to be a delusion and her sudden death was a shock for those to whom she was most dear.

She was somewhat past middle age, of strong character, liberal action, kind disposition and highly respected. Her father, the late Joel Graves, was a pioneer of Scott township and during the last years of his life a resident of Polk county and regarded as a most excellent man and citizen.

On Sunday from the home one mile northwest of the city, the funeral was held. The remains were taken to the Christian church, of which she was a devoted member, where the services were conducted by Rev. Barick and interred in the St. Charles cemetery. Two brothers and other relatives from a distance were in attendance. The stricken husband and two daughters who survive her, have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
