Page 1Meets Death in a Caboose.
James Rhyno, of Lorimor, but formerly of this county, met with a most frightful death last Thursday night about eight o’clock in a railroad accident on the Great Western railroad at Dyersville, about forty miles west of Dubuque. Mr. Rhyno was a stock shipper and at the time was on his way to Chicago, with two cars of cattle. They were just leaving Dyersville and on account of a heavy grade were being assisted by an engine behind the caboose. A following train coming down a grade and at terrific speed struck them in the rear telescoping the pushing engine into the caboose which contained five stockmen and a brakeman, all of which were killed, it is thought instantly as well as both engineers. The wreckage took fire immediately and had it not been for the fire company of the town all would have been entirely consumed, as it was the bodies were burned almost beyond recognition.
Mr. Rhyno’s remains were brought to Lorimor Friday and the funeral took place Sunday. The Coronor’s jury laid the blame of the catastrophe upon the rear brakeman, whose duty it was, knowing that there was a train following, to drop off signals to give warning of the near proximity of the leading train, but as he was killed an explanation of his actions will never be had.
Mr. Rhyno was well known here, being a son of one of our oldest settlers, Jefferson Rhyno, of South township, where the unfortunate victim was born and reared. He was forty-eight years of age and leaves a wife and one grown son, Charles.
