Cyrus Burt McDonald Jr. passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Madison County Memorial Hospital of cancer.
Cy was born Nov. 13, 1934, in Winterset to Cyrus Burt McDonald and Nancy Geraldine (Clark) McDonald. He graduated from DeSoto High School in 1953. On July 5, 1957, he married Marjorie Jean Cronk in Dexter, Iowa. They lived near Fort Devens, Mass., and in Germany for three years while Cy served in the Army Security Agency. Upon returning home, they went back to Cy’s family farm north of Winterset where he farmed until moving to Winterset in 2003.
Cy had served as a Madison County Soil and Water Commissioner, served on the board of directors of the Wallace Foundation, the Winterset School Board, and 14 years as Madison County Supervisor. Cy was state president of the Iowa Heartland Resource Conservation and Development. He also was an active lifetime member of the Worthington United Methodist Church.
Cy is survived by his wife, Jean, of Winterset; a daughter, Cindy (David) Weeks of Urbandale; a son, Mark McDonald (Deanna Hart) of Earlham; a daughter, Lori (Greg) Canon of Ankeny; seven grandchildren — Andrew and Hannah Weeks, Nathan, Maggie, and Nick McDonald, and Steven and Jacob Canon; two sisters, Teressa Casson of Winterset and Delpha (Barry) Trindle of Earlham; three brothers, Frank (Mary Margaret) of Ivins, Utah, Dennis of Omaha, Neb., and Clark of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Nancy.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Worthington United Methodist Church. Burial was at the McDonald-Chase Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the McDonald-Chase Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund.
Arrangements were handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
