Nelson C. Storrs Dead

Rev. Nelson C. Storrs was born December 3, 1818, in Saratoga county, New York, Before he was ten years of age his father died leaving a widow and one daughter to the care of this young boy. He at once sought for work and for three years had hard service on the Erie canal. He then shipped as a sailor on the great lakes, which life he followed for several years. Soon after he was converted, and in 1843 was ordained as a minister of the Christian church. He was a member of the Southwestern Conference of that church in Iowa at the time of his death. His church membership was with the 1st Christian church of Winterset. On Sept. 1, 1839 he united in marriage with Phoebe A. Potter. To this union were born two sons and one daughter, two of whom, a son and daughter are still living. In 1861 he enlisted in Company K, of the 4th Iowa Infantry, serving faithfully and bravely in the defense of the flag he loved so well.

He died Feb. 23, 1903. A large and sympathizing audience attended the funeral service at the Christian church Wednesday afternoon after which his remains were laid to rest with the beautiful burial service of the G.A.R., by his comrades of Pitzer Post No. 55.

The earlier residents of Winterset and Madison county will need no words of commendation upon the life and character of Father Storrs (as he was lovingly called). His earnest sermons, his wonderful power and eloquence in prayer and his daily life, showed to all, the manner and kind of a man he was. His intense loyalty and devotion to his country, his abhorrence of wrong, and championship of all that was right, and his cheerful consistent Christian life, made him respected and honored by all who knew him. Though too feeble to be much in public for the last year of two, perhaps no one of our old citizens will be more missed than Father Storrs.
