JOHN TIERNAN

John Tiernan, late of Madison county, Iowa, was born in County Leitrim, Ireland on May 11th, 1828. He came to American in 1855. He helped to build the first brick building erected on Walnut street, Des Moines.

He was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Regan by Rev. Father Brazill, on the 15th of September 1861, and to them were born ten children, six of whom are now living; three sons, namely; Joseph, James and Peter, and three daughters, namely: Lizzie, now Mrs. Joseph McManus, of Bevington, and the Misses Annie and Ellen Tiernan, who , together with their mother, Mrs. Ellen Tiernan, are left to mourn the loss of a good father and husband.

Mr. Tiernan lived 40 years in Madison county on the farm on which he died. His death occurred on April 8th, 1906. He was nearly 78 years of age at the time of his death.

John Tiernan was a good, honest, upright and industrious man, a kind friend and a man of more than ordinary intelligence.

His remains were interred in St. Patrick's cemetery on April 11th and were followed to the grave by a large procession of mourning friends and neighbors. May he rest in peace.
