Mildred B. Powers, 88, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Westview Care Center in Indianola. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 23 in the Gabel Chapel at the First United Methodist Church in Indianola. A 1 p.m. graveside service will follow at the Winterset Cemetery in Winterset, Iowa. Visitation will be held prior to services from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
Mildred was born in Canova, South Dakota on December 12, 1916, the oldest child of Lawrence and Zella (King) Powers. The family moved to Iowa and Mildred attended school in Winterset, graduating in 1934.
After graduation she worked at Graham's Department Store in Winterset. During Word War II, she worked for Pacific Overseas Air Technical Service Command in Alameda, California. Upon returning to Iowa, she worked at Equitable Life Insurance of Iowa for 34 years, retiring in 1980.
Mildred moved to Indianola in 1947. She was a member of Indianola Business and Professional Women and the Indianola First United Methodist Church.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Maurice and Robert. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and George Burns of Indianola; sisters-in-law, Marguerite Powers and Helen Powers, both of Winterset, three nieces; five nephews; seven great-nieces; ten great-nephews; five great great-nieces; six great great-nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
