Madison county lost one of its leading citizens last Saturday, July 12, 1947, in the death of J. Grant Martin, member of a pioneer Madison county family, who passed away at his home in Patterson, after an extended period of failing health. He was 84 years of age.
Mr. Martin was the son of James and Mary Cramer Martin, and was born Nov. 18, 1862, on a farm his parents homesteaded two miles northwest of St. Charles. All of his life was spent in this county.
His active years were spent in the town of Hanley, St. Charles, and Patterson, where he operated general stores. In addition, he was a livestock buyer, and operated a farm.
He was a member of the Patterson Methodist church, and was well known in the local Masonic circles, having been a member of the St. Charles lodge for over half a century.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Josephine Martin; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Brown of Winterset, Mrs. Lucille McComb of Oakland, and Mrs. Mae Linn of Des Moines; three sons, Harrison Martin of Winterset and Charles and Robert Martin of Patterson; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Maggie Pomeroy of St. Charles.
Funeral services were held Monday from the Patterson Methodist church in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Frank Moore. Burial was made in the Montpelier cemetery.
