James A. Nicholson, son of John and Sarah Nicholson, was born in North Carolina on the 16th day of October, 1830, and died at his home in Earlham, on the morning of March 2nd, 1901, at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 16 days. When he was four years old his parents moved to Indiana and in ’40 came to Iowa.

He was married to Rachel Smith in 1857 and in 1874 they moved to Earlham, where they have since resided, with the exception of six years, when they lived near Linden, Iowa.

He was converted to Christ in 1866; was not a ‘birthright’ member of Friends, but joined of his own accord and was ever a loyal member to his church.

During his last sickness, when his suffering was intense, he repeatedly told his watchers he longed for his sufferings to be over and the spirit to wing its flight. His only wish to live, was, that he might do more for Jesus, who had done so much for him.

One daughter in infancy preceded his to the better land. He leaves a wife and daughter with her family to mourn the loss of a dear one who has gone where “The ransomed of the Lord shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”

The funeral was held from the Friends church on Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. The service was conducted by Rev. Isom Wooten of Marshalltown. The remains were laid away in the Earlham cemetery.
