St. Charles

Mrs. Rachel Shutt, the aged widow of the late Joseph Shutt of Jackson township, Warren county, Iowa died at her home four miles southeast of this city on Friday morning of lung fever. She had been ill for a few days, but the fever was serious and fatal. She was in her eighty-sixth year. She came with her husband and family to the land which they soon converted to a fine farm and home in 1853, and is still owned by the estate and occupied by members of the family.

She was the mother of thirteen children, eight of whom survive their parents. Her husband died May 16, 1877 and the faithful couple rest side by side in the St. Charles cemetery.

Many years ago she joined the Brethren church and remained a worthy and faithful member until the end. Having lived a life of purity and usefulness for a full measure of years she was peacefully removed to a happier realm. Since the death of her dear companion she has been tenderly cared for by her children.

Funeral on Saturday, services at the residence by Rev. Thomas of New Virginia, a large number of relatives, friends and neighbors accompanied her remains to their last resting place, and she is receiving her reward.
