Obituary

Lillie M. Osgood died at her childhood home, near Carthage, Illinois, Thursday evening, October 5, 1899.

About six years ago she came to Winterset to keep house for a brother, but her health failing a year and a half ago, she returned to her Illinois home for needed rest and medical treatment. But consumption had laid deep hold, and though she gradually grew worse, when the end came it was a shock to her friends.

The morning of the last day here, she was unusually strong and cheerful, and greatly enjoyed visiting with Mrs. J. W. and Bert Leinard, of Winterset. The morning brightness was clouded about noon by an attack of hemorrhage of the lungs, and at 5:30 she answered the Master’s call. So quickly did the change come there was no time to call absent loved ones for opportunity for loving goodbyes, but s a child drops sweetly to sleep, so death removed her from this world of suffering.

Since a young girl she had been a member of the Baptist church, and home, and love, and charity for all were proofs of her Christian character, which influence was felt by all with whom she came in contact.

Only a week before her death she wrote a friend that she knew the time of her departure was near at hand, and questioned why we weep for those who go to be with Christ.

By her death many hearts are left sad and lonely, and the home circle is broken for the first time.

She was the oldest of ten children, and had she lived until the day of burial would have been thirty years of age.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Carthage, Ill., at 11 a.m., Sunday, October 8, and a large number of friends followed the body to its last resting place, in the Carthage cemetery.

Those who were absent from the home and went from this place to attend the funeral were the father, sister Nellie and brother Eddie.
