EDWARD BAKER

Edward Baker, who was severely frozen Saturday night, died Tuesday morning at the home of his father in the northeast part of the city.

Baker, commonly called “Brig” was found Sunday morning by George Lucas in the old barn in the rear of the old chicken house on north Front street. It seems that Baker had climbed to the hay loft and in attempting to come down his coat caught on a nail and he hung there all night. He was unconscious when found and both legs and one arm were frozen. He was taken into the house of Mrs. Palmer north of the chicken house and Sunday afternoon moved to his home.

It was thought that by amputation his life could be saved but Monday he became much worse and died early Tuesday morning. He was about thirty-three years old and had lived in Winterset all his life.

He leaves his father, three brothers and three sisters.

The funeral was held Wednesday.

A HORRIBLE DEATH

Brig Baker Freezes to Death in an Old Stable While Intoxicated

Brig Baker, a young man about thirty-five years old and a resident of northeast Winterset, died Tuesday morning from the results of freezing. The unfortunate victim was badly addicted to the liquor habit and was on a spree Saturday. Some time during the evening he wandered into an abandoned stable just west of Young’s grain office a block north of the square. In some manner he fell and his clothing caught on a large spike about three feet from the ground and he hung there all night unable, in his condition to free himself or call for aid. He was discovered about have past seven Sunday morning by George Lucas, who went to a nearby barn to care for his team and was attracted to the barn by Baker’s moaning. Both arms, his lower limbs, back and face were terribly frozen and he died Tuesday morning.
