EVELYN ECKLES, Winterset

Evelyn Eckles, 77, died May 18, 2009, at her daughter’s home in Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Visitation will be from 1–8 p.m. today (Wednesday, May 20) at the funeral home, where family will be present to receive friends from 6–8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice of Winterset or Blank Park Zoo Conservation Committee (www.blankparkzoo.com).

Evelyn Eckles was born Nov. 6, 1931, in Madison County to George W. and Vava Gladys (Delaplain) Shade and was a 1949 graduate of Winterset High School. Her marriage to Dean B. Eckles took place Nov. 20, 1949, in Winterset. Aside from her many years as a homemaker, Evelyn worked as a house mother and director of housing for AIB. She also worked for the Madison County Treasurer. She was a supporter of the Blank Park Zoo Conservation Committee and a member of the Humane Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Mariam Dowler-Brown; and a brother, Clair Cosand.

She is survived by her partner, Jack Jeffs of Winterset; one daughter, Patricia Weeks of Winterset; one son, Dennis Eckles of Winterset; a brother, Rev. D.W. Cosand of New York City; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
