Joan Moran, 54, formerly of Winterset, passed away Monday, January 12, 2009, at Methodist Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, West Des Moines, with burial in East Dubuque, IL.

Joan was born in Dubuque, IA, grew up in West Des Moines, and then lived in the country near Winterset for many years until recently returning to West Des Moines.

She served as a nurse in the U.S. Army and National Guard and then as a Registered Nurse who specialized in working with elderly patients. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish. Joan was passionate in her love for animals and her Irish tradition and traveled frequently throughout the world.

Joan is survived by her mother, Lois Moran, of West Des Moines; brother, Mark (Anabelle) Moran, and niece, Ariana, all of Arlington, VA; niece, Melissa Moran, of Des Moines; nephew, Jason (Natalia) Moran, of Singapore; aunt, Mary (Gary) Rickie, of East Dubuque, IL; and uncle, Gene Maguire, of Buena Park, CA. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward, and brother, Craig.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at McLaren's Chapel with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to ASPCA (Amer. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.)
