Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester S. Clifton of Winterset, lifelong residents of Madison county, died last Tuesday and Wednesday, one day apart, at Memorial hospital here.
Mr. Clifton's death occurred Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the age of 82 years. Mrs. Clinton died Wednesday, Oct. 13. She was 79 years of age.
Sylvester Clifton was born in Ohio Township Feb. 5, 1889, a son of James and Mary McGuire Clifton. His wife was the former Eletha M Silliman, daughter of Charles and Mary Moore Silliman. She was born near Peru on Feb. 1, 1892.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifton were married March 7, 1912. There active life was spent in farming. They had lived in Winterset in recent years, and he had been employed at Memorial hospital here.
Their only daughter, Mrs. Mary Nuzum, preceded him in death. They are survived by a niece, Mrs. Walter Caudill, who they raised in their home, by six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Clifton also leaves a sister, Mrs. Zella Davis of Helena, Mont.; and Mrs. Clifton is survived by two brothers, W. J. Silliman of Holley, Colo., and Lonnie Silliman Winterset; and my sister, Mrs. Pearl Emerson of Winterset.
Mr. Clifton also leaves a half-sister, Mrs. Floda Emerson, and a half-brother, Lawrence Delong, both the Winterset.
Funeral services for both Mr. and Mrs. Clifton were held Friday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. Charles Updike, pastor of the Winterset Foursquare church, and by a grandson of the deceased, the Rev. Loren Caudill of Waukegon, Ill. Burial was made Ebenezer cemetery.

1971Elderly Couple Die Day Apart At Winterset
(The Tribune’s Iowa News Service)WINTERSET, IA. – An elderly Winterset couple died about a day apart at Madison County Memorial Hospital.
Sylvester S. Clifton, 82, a retired farmer, took ill Tuesday afternoon and died in the hospital Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Clifton, 79, who had been ill for some time and recently lived in a Winterset nursing home, also entered the hospital Tuesday and died Wednesday night.
Funeral services for the Cliftons will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Collins Funeral Home here.
Mr. Clifton is survived by a sister, Mrs. Zella Davis of Helena, Mont. Mrs. Clifton is survived by two brothers, Lonnie Silliman of Winterset and W. J. Silliman of Holly, Colo., and a sister, Mrs. Pearl Emerson of Winterset.
Both are survived by six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Note: Eletha is buried at the Ebenezer Cemetery, East Peru, Madison Co., IA.
