Death of J. S. McGinnis

J. S. McGinnis, whose illness was noted in these columns last week, died at his home on east Court Avenue on last Friday evening September 15th.

The deceased was a native of Indiana and moved to this county at an early day and lived until about five years ago in Union township near Patterson.

He was a man of much force of character, and was universally respected for unswerving honesty and good citizenship. He was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church and the funeral services held on Monday afternoon were conducted by Rev. Fred Berry, of Winterset, assisted by Rev. Lee, of Wick, and interment made in the McGinnis cemetery near Patterson.

JOSEPH MCGINNIS

Joseph McGinnis, an old resident of this county, died at his home on east Court Avenue Friday night. Although he had been in failing health for some time he was not thought to be seriously ill until a few days before his death.

Mr. McGinnis lived for a number of years on his farm near Patterson, coming to Winterset about six years ago. Three years ago he moved to Mitchellville and engaged in the mercantile business but owing to the condition of his health was compelled to give it up. Mr. and Mrs. McGinnis returned to Winterset a little over a year ago.

Besides his wife, Mr. McGinnis leaves two sons and two step-daughters, all of whom were present for the funeral, which occurred Sunday at the residence. Rev. Berry of the Baptist church had charge of the services. The remains were buried in the cemetery at Patterson (McGinnis).

Mr. McGinnis is one of the best known and most respected citizens of the county and his family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.

Another of Madison county’s old settlers died last week in the person of J. S. McGinnis. Mr. McGinnis had not been in rugged health for sometime but was not what might be called sick. He was on the streets Monday, and to the general observer was as well as usual, but he was not well and was up town for the purpose of consulting his physician. He began to get worse within a day or two, and the development of the disease, meningitis, was so rapid and determined that nothing could be done to stay it, and he passed away Friday night.

The funeral occurred Monday afternoon and the remains were interred in the cemetery near Patterson, where his former wife and one child are buried.

Mr. McGinnis was one of our best men. Most of his life was passed on the farm in Union township, where he was highly successful. He was a man of upright character and clean morals; highly respected by everyone and thoroughly reliable and trustworthy. We all join with the bereaved family in mourning his loss.

Joseph S. McGinnis was born in the State of Indiana, Nov. 24th, 1843, and died September 9th, 1904, being 61 years of age.

He has lived in Madison county, Iowa, 51 years, or all but ten years of his life time. Brother McGinnis has been married twice, the former marriage was to Minerva M. Tisdale, Nov. 12th, 1864, she having died July 16th, 1889. To this union there were born three children, two sons and one daughter, the daughter having died Jan. 5th, 1886.

The second marriage was to Mary E. Corwin, April 16th, 1890, with whom he lived in loving fellowship until death a few hours past has separated them. She with the two sons by the former marriage and her own two daughters remain to mourn the loss of a true husband and loving father.

Brother McGinnis was a member of the Baptist church for 41 years, uniting when he was 20 years of age, and all along was earnestly devoted to all its deeper spiritual interests. In the church at Patterson he was trustee and Bible school superintendent. He was a quiet lovable man, interested in most in matters pertaining to God’s glory.

Tileville

One of the old time citizens of this neighborhood, Joe McGinnis, died in Winterset last Friday night and was buried in the Patterson cemetery Monday.
