Mary Newton, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Newton, was born in Winterset, May 16, 1875, and lived with her mother until April 10, 1893, when she married Merlin Hamilton and moved from her birthplace to Elliott, Iowa.

The last two years of her life she was greatly afflicted, and lived with her mother until death came and called her to her everlasting home. Her death directly followed a severe surgical operation. She was 23 years, 7 months and 28 days old.

To the many kind neighbors and friends who ministered to the deceased and extended sympathy and help to grief stricken friends, the family desire to extend their thanks.

The funeral was attended by many sympathetic friends.

Mary Newton, a young woman living in the east part of town died Tuesday evening from a surgical operation. She was afflicted with a tumor and her death was only a question of a few days unless it was removed. The operation proved too much for her weak condition and she succumbed a few hours after.
