Earlham EchoJames Eugene, son of James W. and Jennie C. Witham, was born October 13, 1908, at Panora, Iowa. He was the youngest of seven children and spent his childhood in Dallas, Madison and Polk counties. He graduated from Earlham High School in 1926 and later lived with his brother, Charles, and mother northwest of Adel for some time.
On August 28, 1936, he was united in marriage to Ruth Bower Shaw of Adel and one son was born to this union. He farmed the Shaw farm northwest of Adel and later moved to Des Moines where he was employed at the Iowa Packing Co. until he was retired after contracting Hodgkin’s Disease in 1959.
They had lived in Adel for several years where they helped care for her father until his death and last year moved to Berthoud, Colorado, where he passed away July 7, 1962 at the age of 53 years, 8 months and 24 days.
James was a kind and loving husband, father and brother and was well-known and well-liked by his fellowmen.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church at Berthoud, of which he was a member, Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by the Rev. Jay H. Arnold.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, a son James E. Witham jr., of Cocoa Beach, Florida; one brother, Charles of Winterset; four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Curtis of Bremerton, Washington, Mrs. Lillian Ory of Earlham, Mrs. Edith Boren of Sherill, Missouri, and Mrs. Anabel Jamison of Waukee.
He was laid to rest in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Berthoud, Colorado.
