Robert Francis Spain 78, died Tuesday, October 26 at Kavanagh on 56th Street of cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, October 29 at St. John's Catholic Church in Cumming, of which he was a member, with burial to follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Robert was born in Des Moines and spent all of his life in the Cumming area. A farmer and machine operator, Robert was very proud of his Irish heritage.
He was active in the Knights of Columbus and the Horseman's Benevolent and Protective Association.
Robert was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed deer and mushroom hunting, gardening, horse racing and baseball.
He will be missed by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy; sons, Daniel P. (Joyce) and Robert Francis Jr. (Mary); a daughter, Marsha (Gene) Swinford; grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan) St. John, Collette Spain, Daniel E. (Lisa) Spain, Sara Spain and Robert Francis Spain III; and great-grandchildren, Caleb Spain, Zachary Spain and Hannah St. John. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Mollie Spain.
Visitation will take place 5 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Parish Hall in Cumming with a 7 p.m. Rosary. A special thank you to Hospice of Central Iowa and the Kavanagh House on 56th Street.
