Esther Read, 84, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a period of declining health. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Pastor Al Polito Jr. will officiate. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Dan (Kris) of Monticello; a son-in-law, Jerry Olson of South Amana; a sister, Velda (Bill) Morse of Winterset; two sisters-in-law, Dottie Richardson of Cedar Rapids and Betty Thompson of Indianola; four grandchildren, Erin (Dan) Walters, Andrew (Mindy) Olson, J. D. (Athena) Read and Drew Read; and five great-grandchildren, Sam, Luke, Lydia, Braydon and Maison.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, on Dec. 7, 1991, and a daughter, Sharon on Jan. 29, 1996.
Esther Edna Hulbert was born Dec. 2, 1917, in St. Charles. She was the daughter of Edgar F. and Dolly Pettit Hulbert. She graduated from Patterson High School.
Esther Edna Read and James Read were married May 15, 1936, in Bethany, Mo. The couple lived in Des Moines and Burlington before moving to Monticello in 1939.
Jim was the manager of the National Tea Grocery Store. Esther managed the store while Jim served in the Navy during World War II. In 1953, Esther and Jim purchased the creamery store and started the Highway Market. They retired from the business in 1972.
Esther was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She loved her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Esther also enjoyed her dogs.
