Watie Bishop was born in Vinton, Ind., July 19, 1834, and departed this life June 29, 1913, aged 79 years, 11 months and 10 days.

When she was seven years of age she came with her parents to Burlington, Iowa, where she lived until her marriage to Benjamin Purcell July 1, 1850. In the fall of that year this newly married couple came to Madison county to make a home. They had the privations and the hardships of the early pioneer, but also the joy of seeing the wild wastes turned to the present great state of Iowa.

To Mr. and Mrs. Purcell nine children were born, five dying in infancy. Those living are James Madison, Mrs. Mary Barnett, Mrs. Lou Harris and John Purcell. All were present at the funeral but Mrs. Barnett.

Her husband died Nov. 23, 1898. Since his death Mrs. Purcell made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Harris, at whose home she died. She had been deaf since 17 years of age, on which account she seldom left home. She lived devoted to her family and friends. She was in feeble health for a number of years. She confessed faith in Christ as her Saviour when a young girl and has lived a Christian all her life.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. G. Hohanshelt, pastor of the M. E. church, at 3 o’clock at the home of Roy King on East Court avenue.

Transcriber's note: Gravestone surname spelled Purscell.
