Hawkeye: Died, at her home, northeast of St. Charles, on November 14, 1898, Mrs. Ruth E. Bowers, aged 82 years. Ruth E. Bowers, a daughter of John and Elizabeth Millard, was born in Delaware county, New York, on December 14, 1816. She was married to Alanson Bowers (now deceased) on January 26, 1843, and to them were born six children, five of whom are still living. Samuel C. remained at home and cared for the mother until the close of her life. Deceased was converted in early life and joined the Baptist church, to which she belonged until 30 years ago, and then she united with the M. E. church, and lived a faithful member until death. Mother Bowers lived a beautiful and consistent Christian life through all these years, as her many friends and neighbors do and will certify. In the dark days of 1862, while the war cloud hung over our country, the husband and father stepped from the side of his faithful wife and became a soldier, joining the 10th Iowa regiment, and that blessed mother stood firm and unflinching, doing duty both to God and home. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church on Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Hancox, the pastor, in the presence of a large congregation of relatives and friends, after which the remains were laid by the side of her husband in the St. Charles cemetery.
