Obituary

One of the first settlers of Madison county has passed away at Josephine, Oregon. Grandma Harmon died March 19, 1898, aged 89 years, 2 months and 9 days.

She was born January 10, 1809, and settled in Madison county in the year 1848. She lived a quarter of a mile from the site of Winterset when it was first laid out, then moved on what is known as the Backbone Ridge, four and one-half miles southwest of Winterset, where they lived many years.

She died as she had lived, a professor of religion for over seventy-five years. The older she grew, the closer she lived to Christ, her Redeemer.

Probably there are some of the old settlers who remember Grandma Harmon, and remember the hardships and privations she went through. She lived a long and useful life, and has made her calling sure in the world beyond.
