Earlham Echo – October 18, 1962

Obituary

Cumine Goldie Welch, daughter of David and June Johnson, was born in the Bear Creek community near Earlham, Iowa, on January 13, 1899, and passed from this life on October 9, 1962, at Madison County Memorial hospital at Winterset, Iowa, where she was reported to have been a most cooperative and appreciative patient.

The place of her birth near Bear Creek church has also been her home for several years preceding her death.

She received her education in the local country school, and was a graduate of Earlham high school.

Through the following years, she assisted in the maintenance of the family home, or served as a practical nurse in many homes of surrounding communities. She enjoyed her nursing profession, and the friendships formed through this work meant much to her.

On May 16, 1945, she was united in marriage to S. C. Welch of Earlham, Iowa. During the few years she was privileged to have her own home, she was a faithful, loyal wife, desiring only to serve to the best of her ability, and it was a great grief to her when the death of S. C. Welch, on January 21, 1954 severed their companionship.

It was then that she returned to her father’s home to fill the place left vacant by the death of her sister, Sylvia in 1953. Since that time she and her brother Russell have cared for their father through his last illness; later an invalid friend, Lucy Ellis, was brought to their home and many months were devoted to her care.

Mina was a life-long member of the Friends church. After her marriage, she took her membership to Earlham Friends, where it has remained until the time of her death. There she served actively on the Peace Committee and was superintendent of the Home Department as well as being helpful in many other ways.

She has witnessed to the fact of her conversion in early childhood, and has always been ready to respond when opportunity was given for prayer or praise to the Lord. Her voice will be missed, because Mina truly obeyed the injunction “By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.”

She was a very active member of WCTU, also belonged to the Missionary Societies at Earlham and Bear Creek, being a faithful, interested supporter of both of them. For years she took an active part in the Interdenominational Prayer Group at Earlham.

Since the time when severe illness struck Mina in April of 1961, many have marveled at the fortitude she has displayed, and the serene manner in which she has continued her life. Her daily walk said “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.”

The one who will miss her most is her brother, Russell, who is thus left alone in his home and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to him; also to her brother Leevern of El Cerrito, California, his wife Evelyn and son Larry, and a step-grandson Robert Allen. Her memory will be cherished by many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at Earlham in the Evans Funeral Home and at Bear Creek church on Saturday afternoon, October 13, with the pastors, L. Willard Reynolds and Ernest Baiotto officiating. Interment was in the Wiscotta cemetery near Redfield.
