Mr. James McNeeley, whose serious illness was mentioned in these columns last Friday, died Saturday morning. The funeral was held at the Christian church Sunday, conducted by Elder John McMillan, and was largely attended.

Mr. McNeeley was at the time of his death but three months short of eighty-one years of age. All his living children and grand-children live in the city or vicinity and all, requiring nine double carriages, were present at the funeral except Miss Grace Houlette. An obituary will appear in our next issue.

Obituary

James McNeley, one of the old settlers of Madison county, died at his home in Winterset on Saturday last, May 15th, 1897, at the age of 80 years and 9 months. He was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, August 16th, 1816, and was living in Tuscarawas county, same state, when united in marriage to Jane DeLong in 1841. In 1854 he moved to Madison county, Iowa, where he lived until his death. He enlisted in the late war in 1861, in company K., 10th Iowa, under Capt. Lusby, and served until he received his discharge.

He was the father of ten children, four daughters and six sons, of whom one daughter and five sons remain to comfort his wife. He united with the Christian church over fifty years ago, and has been a faithful member. The funeral was held at the Christian church Sunday, and was conducted by the G.A.R. Post. The funeral sermon was preached by Elder John McMillan, who was assisted by Rev. Storrs.
