Joseph K. Evans, Pioneer

Joseph K. Evans, one of Madison county’s pioneer settlers and the first treasurer of Madison county, passed away at his home in Audubon, Iowa, on Wednesday the 27th of January 1909, at the age of ninety. He was born in the state of Indiana in the year 1819. Moved to Burlington, Ia., in 1844. In 1848 he moved to Madison county, Iowa and enetered land near Winterset, being a physician he soon moved to Winterset. A few years ago he moved to Audubon which place has since been his home.

He was elected the first treasurer of Madison county in 1849, and afterwards in 1857 was elected to the office of sheriff. In politics he adhered to the party of Jefferson and Jackson.

He descended from good old fighting stock. His father was a native of Wales and emigrated to the United States in 1783, served under General Harrison at Tippecanoe and was a soldier under General Jackson. His grandfather on his mother’s side was a soldier in Daniel Morgan’s celebrated rifle corps and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at New York. Afterwards, he served under General Greene and was killed near Charleston, South Carolina.

Mr. Evans was a highly respected, well informed, and always took an active part in politics, and at the time of his death was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church. One daughter, Mrs. B. F. Myers, of Webster township, this county, and one son, John Evans, of Nebraska, survive him.

Death of Joseph Evans

Joseph Evans died at his home in the city last Tuesday evening after an illness of several weeks. He was an aged and highly respected citizen.

Joseph K. Evans was born in Jeffersonville Indiana, Sept. 15, 1819 and died at his home in Audubon on the 26th day of January. He was united in marriage to Amanda Smith in 1844 and to this union was born six children, two of whom are still living, Elizabeth Myers, of Lormier (sic), Iowa, and John Evans, of Nebraska.

He was a resident of Kentucky for a number of years and from there he moved to Winterset Iowa where he [was] recorder and sheriff of Madison county for two years. He came to Audubon about 25 years ago where he had resided. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

He leaves to mourn his loss a son, a daughter, thirteen grandchildren and ten great grand children.
